Ludwig Hohlwein (1874-1939) was born in Germany and was trained as an architect. He practiced until 1906, then started a new career in poster design. He then became one of the most important poster designers in Germany. The high tonal contrast and interlocking shapes of his work make it instantly recognizable. During World War I, he made propaganda posters for Germany (how funny. James Montgomery Flagg was making posters for the U.S. while this guy was making them for Germany. We're covering all the bases).
